Urban Crafts Foundation

We work with hand-forged steel; brass and sheet copper. As well as designing and making our own work, we enjoy working with artists, designers and other creatives to help develop one-off pieces of artwork. Teaching is fundamental to UCF and we are especially proud of the work we do with young people. As well as our permanant base in Essex, in order to reach a wide audience we have a mobile forge that we can take off-site. We have used this to teach groups at events including The Festival of Making, University College London; The Waltham Forest Borough of Culture and Electromagnetic Festival, Eastnor Deerpark.

About

The Urban Crafts Foundation is a not-for-profit Community Interest Company based at Lambourne End Centre for Outdoor Education in Essex. Our forge is designed so that we can efficiently teach blacksmithing and coppersmithing to groups and individuals as well as carry out commissioned work. The classes we offer to members of the public allow us to run subsidised workshops with young people facing challenges that stop them from thriving in mainstream education.

Our Commissions include signage for restaurants in London's West End, restoration work on historic buildings, community projects and small-scale domestic work. We are a forward-thinking, design-led organisation that prides itself on working creatively with other makers. In 2022 we initiated an Artist in Residence program where artists can spend a short time with us learning how to work with steel and copper whilst developing their own sculptures.
