About
I am a self employed decorative painter, established in 1985, specialising in British Folk Art, decorative painting and restoration.. My work is very varied, from fairground rides to Canal art, Gypsy waggons to clock dial restoration, furniture to interiors.
Most of my work has been self taught, reading old books and initially visiting and talking to lots of older painters, signwriters and antique restorers.
When I was 16 I had friends who had working boats around Birmingham, and they encouraged me to start painting Roses and Castles and doing the wood graining. As a family we always visited Stow on the Wold Horse Fair so I had traveller friends, and started painting wagons, mainly old style with gilding. I was lucky to meet older painters who helped and taught me, you couldn't go to college to learn the tips and tricks. I used to visit Fred Fowle and Billy Hall to learn fairground decoration and marbling. In my mid to late 20's I worked and learnt from John Pockett and Peter Ingram.
I have been fully self supporting and self employed for the last 40 years, seeing the fashions, materials and techniques evolve.
In the last few years I have included Illustrated pictorial maps and sgraffito pottery.
Today I sell at Tinsmiths, Ledbury, The Scottish Gallery ,Edinburgh, and am a member of The Gloucestershire Guild of Craftsmen.
I hope that one day that the use of paint will be included as a craft.
