About

Nálbinding (Needle Binding)
Nálbinding is an ancient textile technique dating back thousands of years—long before knitting and crochet. Practised by Vikings and other early cultures, it involves using a single needle and short lengths of yarn to create durable, warm textiles such as socks, mittens, and hats.

Unlike knitting, each stitch in nálbinding is individually looped and secured, producing a dense, hardwearing fabric that will not unravel. With regional variations such as the Oslo, Mammen, and York (Jorvik) stitches, it carries rich stories from Scandinavian and European traditions.

Today, nálbinding is listed as an endangered craft on the Heritage Crafts Association’s Red List. Fewer people are learning or practising it, and much traditional knowledge risks being lost.

By reviving and sharing this meditative, sustainable craft, modern makers help to preserve a vital link to our cultural and craft heritage—one stitch at a time.
