About
A traditional signwriter and fairground artist, Amy's work is heavily influenced from growing up travelling steam fairgrounds in the West Country. The elaborate and visual typography, meticulous lines and flamboyant colours are reflected in the signs she creates, both to commissions and for exhibitions
All her work is undertaken using traditional methods – by hand, using no tape nor digital assistance. Projects undertaken include restoration and paintwork commissions in the steam heritage, fairground and circus industries – including steam engines, living wagons and circus lorries – alongside the design and production of bespoke signage, in collaboration with both individuals and businesses. Work is undertaken in-situ, across the country, or from Amy's studio in Falmouth, Cornwall.
Alongside working to commission, Amy has a practice-led PhD which focused on re-establishing the identities of fairground females in the archive, through the construction of a series of illustrated spaces. These spaces use signwriting to illustratively tell stories of the females' lives. The PhD enquiry is underpinned by extensive research undertaken at the National Fairground and Circus Archive (NFCA) and was part-funded by the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust (QEST), who support excellence in British Craft. Amy also lectures on the BA Illustration Course at Arts University Bournemouth (AUB).
