About
Maria Lalic is a textile artist and dollmaker inspired by the legend, landscape and people of Wales. She uses a variety of traditional stitch and yarn techniques to create mixed media interpretations of place and makes cloth dolls which illustrate present day social and cultural issues. These are known as Protest Dolls and are regularly exhibited at venues in South Wales. Maria also makes dolls which fall into the category of 'Objects of Power' - crafted representations of beings which navigate or narrate the human experience. Maria is currently researching and writing a book on the portable craft skills practised by lone itinerant women who walked through early medieval Wales. This hybrid and creative non-fiction project will be illustrated by works of contemporary textile art and recreated historical artefacts like scrips and badges that will be made using traditional craft techniques including braiding, lucet work, nalbinding and finger weaving.
