About
As a textile artist and dollmaker inspired by the legend, landscape and people of Wales, I use a range of creative stitch and yarn techniques and often incorporate poetry or maps into my work. I make cloth dolls which illustrate present day social and cultural issues - these are known as Protest Dolls and are regularly exhibited at venues in South Wales. I also create dolls which fall into the category of 'Objects of Power' - crafted representations of folkloric or imagined beings which navigate and narrate the human experience. As part of a hybrid project I am currently working on (which illustrates yarn crafts used by itinerant women in early medieval Wales) I have developed more traditional skills including lucet braid, crewel work, needlepoint, Bayeux stitch and finger weaving. During the Covid 19 pandemic, I found myself becoming a repairer of elderly, injured or distressed dolls and teddy bears who would be left on my doorstep or arrive in the post. A shelf in my workspace now acts as a waiting list zone and is rarely empty. Most of my creative work is produced with exhibition in mind but I do occasionally take part in events with other makers or appear as an artist in residence.
