About

Anne Fontenoy is a designer/dressmaker of hand sewn ladies clothes; slow fashion. She is also a visual artist. She learnt to hand sew before going to school. At school the curriculums included hand embroidery, art and technical drawing. She started designing clothes and making dress patterns in her early teens, then trained in London art and couture studios where the majority of the work was done by hand. She set up her own practice in 1981 creating mostly one-off bridal wear, evening dresses and luxury day wear. She has a collection of dresses, some of which are for sale on her website shop or by appointment in Tunbridge Wells where there are more to see than in her online shop; some are samples for made to order dresses and for inspiration for unique designs. She specialises in working with natural fibres such as silk, wool, cotton, linen, English cotton Leavers Lace, 100% Silk lace when available, as well as organic cotton lace and some GOTS Certified organic natural white silks. She can have some silks dyed or printed to order with small minimums. English silk taffeta by the metre. Also English silk jacquard is available, usually made to order (around 10 metre) although stock lengths are sometimes available. Anne creates and sketches the dress designs, hand drafts all the dressmaking patterns and sews everything by hand. Her dress designs are either plain or embellished with her unique hand embroidery or beaded designs. At an appointment you can view her embroidery portfolio. She creates hand sewn accessories such as pochette bags, hand beaded headdresses and hand painted silk scarves, as well as hand beaded decorations, handmade cards and artwork which is mostly on paper often drawn with pencils and oil pastels. She has a BA Open degree from Open University which is made up of a Certificate in Accounting from OU Business School, a Diploma in Classical Studies, A certificate in French as well as courses in Ethics and Heritage.
